JOB PURPOSEThe Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist role involves management of a team or section of the laboratory, or responsibility across the laboratory in a field such as occupational health and safety, quality management, training, or service delivery. The Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist supports the laboratory management team to implement organisational and departmental policies, and oversee the total test process (pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical).MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESSpecific
i. Manage the day-to-day activities of the team, ensuring that specimens are prioritised according to clinical urgency, making decisions on suitability of specimens for testing, and handling problematic specimens.
ii. Optimise operations of team to meet performance indicators.
iii. Supervise personnel performing testing and reporting results.
iv. Ensure that personnel comply with policies, work instructions and guidelines, and work with Laboratory Manager and reporting officers on disciplinary measures.
v. Ensure that all incidents are reported, assist in investigation of incidents, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
vi. Manage equipment, ensuring that preventive maintenance is performed, and trouble-shooting and resolving technical problems.
vii. Have a good operating knowledge of laboratory information system, equipment software, and other software used in laboratory.
viii. Oversee calibration, quality control and validation of laboratory analysers and other laboratory equipment, including point-of-care testing devices (where applicable).
ix. Oversee testing of specimens from quality assurance programme surveys.
x. Provide training, competency assessment, and supervision of medical laboratory technologists and medical officers (where applicable).
xi. Write and review documents, including policies, work instructions, bench guides and forms.
xii. Perform specimen reception, order entry and other duties in laboratory, as assigned.
xiii. Identify and trouble-shoot major issues, and make decisions on whether escalation to Laboratory Manager and Head of Department is required.General
i. Perform duties in a professional manner, commensurate with academic and technical skills and training.
ii. Adhere to laws, regulations, and hospital procedures and policies.
iii. Uphold the visions and practices of Woodlands Health.
iv. Fulfil continuing medical education requirements.
v. Participate in quality improvement programmes.
vi. Perform any other duties as directed by the Laboratory Manager.JOB REQUIREMENTSEducation, training and experience
i. Bachelor's degree in biomedical science or equivalent
ii. Master's degree in biomedical science or equivalent
iii. Diploma with relevant experience and competency
iv. Minimum of four years of working in a clinical laboratory, including leadership or supervisory positions
v. Experience in healthcare setting certified by recognised accreditation body
vi. Experience in training and assessment of personnel
vii. Experience in writing and implementing policies and work instructions
viii. Experience in Ministry of Health licensing, and CAP, ISO or JCI accreditation processes
ix. ASCPi certificate is preferredProfessional Licence (if any)
