Job DescriptionThe National University of Singapore invites applications for a Research Associate position in the Department of Synthetic Biology Translational Research Program, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Appointments will be on a 1-year contract in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.Purpose of the postThe Research Associate (RAssoc) will be working closely with the Principal Investigator and a team of researchers on bioprocessing and downstream process development. The RAssoc's principal role will be to assist in method development and process optimization for research projects requiring bacterial and yeast fermentation as well as provide technical support and training to laboratory users.Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Research Associate is expected to: * Design and execute fermentation experiments to optimize the production of target compounds/proteins.
  • Develop and scale-up bioprocesses for the cultivation of microbial strains (bacterial, conventional and non-conventional yeasts) from benchtop to pilot scale fermentation.
  • Conduct process optimization studies to improve fermentation performance, yield, and productivity.
  • Lead efforts in developing scalable downstream processes, including but not limited to filtration, chromatography, and other purification techniques.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of strain engineering to fermentation and downstream processes.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Analyse data from fermentation and purification experiments, interpret results, and present findings to the team.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise during fermentation or purification processes.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure adherence to good manufacturing practices (GMP) and safety guidelines.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in bioprocessing and downstream purification technologies and apply them to enhance processes and productivity.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to team members and contribute to the overall success of the group's translational projects.
QualificationsThe applicant should:
  • Masters in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or a related field.
  • Proven track record of successfully optimizing and scaling-up fermentation processes for the production of compounds/proteins.
  • Expertise in downstream purification techniques, such as filtration, chromatography, and other purification techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with various bioreactors, fermenters, and other bioprocessing equipment.
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols in bioprocessing.
Qualifications
  • Proficiency in data analysis, statistical tools (JMP), and design of experiments (DoE) for process optimization is an advantage.
  • Preferably have experience with process simulation and modelling.
  • Be able to work both independently and in teams.
  • Demonstrates an investigative nature and is attentive to details.
  • Demonstrates an ability to lead and mentor junior team members.
  • Passion for innovation and staying updated with the latest trends in bioprocessing.
