Job Description:The Core Elementary Teacher is responsible to the Principal in the execution of professional duties and responsibilities to meet the curriculum requirements of the assigned schoolOverviewThis teaching position is specifically for the Grade 1 (turning 7) classroom running the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and it is an extension of our current Preschool program, which takes inspiration from the Reggio Emilia Approach. We are introducing this new Grade 1 program in our current International Preschool and shall grow this Elementary program, Grade 1 to Grade 5, gradually increasing each grade year by year.Our interdisciplinary curriculum blends academics with hands-on learning, centred around observation in and participation with our community. This community extends outside of our school to the immediate neighbourhood and the nature of Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, where we execute our outdoor education program.Job Role & Responsibilities
  • Undertake the teaching of a class in accordance with the school's agreed policies and guidelines.
  • Use a variety of appropriate teaching and caring methods to ensure high quality learning takes place.
  • Together with management, provide detailed risk assessments for environments beyond the school that the children will be working in.
  • Provide planning documents identifying specific learning objectives, differentiated tasks, special needs, extension and assessment, to the Principal or other authorized officer.
  • Create an interesting and lively class which promotes independent learning.
  • Share in the management of pastoral care, health, welfare and behaviour of all students and in particular, those within your designated class group.
  • Collaborate with Principal and staff in establishing and developing effective student assessment procedures and moderation portfolios. Keep appropriate records of achievement for each child in class and provide reports as necessary.
  • Respect and value each child's social, cultural and religious background and by example, provide mutual respect and tolerance.
  • Build positive links between yourself and parents of children in your care.
  • Encourage children to take pride in their own environment and show respect and concern for others, to the benefit of the school as a caring community.
  • Guide, motivate and monitor classroom helpers in carrying out their tasks.
  • Ensure the provision of equal opportunities for all.
  • Take corporate responsibility for displays throughout the school.
  • Be responsible for all aspects of classroom management e.g. Care of equipment with resources well-labelled and accessible. Maintain a tidy, well organised room and outdoor area.
  • Share management and delivery of assemblies.
  • Maintain professional dialogue with colleagues concerning the children, other colleagues and the school. Treat all information with confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with staff in long term planning.
  • Offer and receive advice and guidance on issues which affect the whole school's performance and ethos.
  • Share your expertise.
  • Participate in appraisal procedures and in-service training that provide personal, professional and career development.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Primary Education from a recognised University with not less than 3 years full-time study.
  • Teachers Certificates, Diplomas or other Teacher Accreditation courses and certification are required if the applicant's degree is not in Education.
  • Experience in outdoor learning and expedition is highly regarded
  • At least 4 years of relevant professional teaching experience, preferably in an international school environment.
  • Strong knowledge of inquiry based learning is required.
  • Applicants must be fluent English speakers, not necessarily native English speakers.
  • Willingness to commit to a 2 year contract.
